PEOPLE reports exclusively that Shameless star Emmy Rossum and writer/director Sam Esmail became engaged over the weekend in Los Angeles. Rossum, 28, and Esmail, 37, have been dating for two years.

Esmail directed Rossum in his 2014 romantic dramedy Comet, which also starred Justin Long. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Rossum began her theatrical career at the age of seven when she sang at the Metropolitan Opera at LINCOLN Center. Her acting performance in "Songcatcher," at the age of 13, earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination in the category of "Best Debut Performance."

In 2004, her starring performance as "Christine" in "The Phantom of the Opera" earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination, as well as the National Board of Review's "Best Female Breakthrough Performance" Award. Rossum currently stars in Showtime's dark comedy series "Shameless," which is based on the long-running British series of the same title. Her previous television credits include guest-starring appearances on "Law and Order" and "The Practice." Her other recent work includes "You're Not You" alongside Josh Duhamel and Hilary Swank, Shawn Christensen's "Before I Disappear" and "Comet" opposite Justin Long. Other film credits include Warner Bros.' "Beautiful Creatures," "DARE" alongside Zach Gilford, "Dragonball," "Poseidon," "The Day After Tomorrow" with Jake Gyllenhaal, and the Clint Eastwood-directed drama "Mystic River."
