Variety reports that Legendary Entertainment has acquired the rights to a Pokemon movie and plans to team up with the Pokémon Company for the first live-action Pokemon film franchise with a "Detective Pikachu" movie. The character was first introduced through a video game released in Japan.

While few details were revealed, the project has been fast-tracked and is expected to begin production in 2017. Since the release of the Pokemon Go app, which has taken the world by storm, Nintendo stock has risen 25%. The new reality game allows users to "capture, battle and train the Pokemon virtual creatures."

First introduced in Japan back in 1996, Pokemon has sold 279 million video games globally with 21.5 billion cards shipped to 74 countries, and an animated series which is now in its 19th season.
