Matthew Michael Carnahan Makes His Directorial Debut with MOSUL

The new feature film "Mosul," written and directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan, is now in post-production in Los Angeles. Shot in secret this past spring on location in Morocco, "Mosul," explores the true story of an elite police unit made up almost entirely of native sons of Mosul who fought to liberate the city from six thousand ISIS militants. "Mosul" is based on an extraordinary feat of journalism by Luke Mogelson in The New Yorker in which he embedded with the unit for two months and documented the SWAT team's desperate fight, block by block, to destroy ISIS. Joe and Anthony Russo's AGBO and Condé Nast Entertainment shot the film in Marrakech, Morocco and have been editing in Los Angeles at AGBO. The film delivers scope, action and quality on par with the best of Hollywood. Shot by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Mauro Fiore, "Mosul" is beautiful, epic and impossibly tense.

The film is written and directed by Matthew Michael Carnahan and produced by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo (AGBO), Mike Larocca (AGBO) Jeremy Steckler for Condé Nast Entertainment (The Old Man and the Gun; Only the Brave) and Dawn Ostroff. The executive producers are Todd Makurath(AGBO), Christopher Markus (AGBO), Stephen McFeely (AGBO), Mohamed Al-Daradji (Son of Babylon), Patrick Newall (Anon), Wang Zhongjun, Wang Zhonglei and Felice Bee.

With meticulous attention to detail and an obligation to portray the time, the events and the protagonists with unprecedented authenticity, this film is the flip side of "American Sniper": these are the soldiers for whom the only way home is by fighting to re-claim it. The film, the directorial debut of screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan, features a cast drawn from the Middle East, North AFRICA and the Iraqi diaspora. It marks the Russo Brothers' commitment to producing auteur-driven films of social importance. The film is also produced by Condé Nast Entertainment in its expanding roster of feature film productions.

"Our writer/director Matthew Michael Carnahan was the perfect artist to depict this uniquely regional story which CHAMPIONS a culture that has never really been championed on screen before. The heart of the movie depicts the innate desire to fight for country and home," said Anthony and Joe Russo.
