Variety reports that Roger Moore, who starred in seven of the JAMES BOND movies and as Simon Templar in the television series THE SAINT, has died in Switzerland after a short battle with cancer. He was 89. The actor's family issued an announcement that was read by Sky News: "It is with a heavy heart that we must announce our loving father Sir Roger Moore has passed away in Switzerland after a short but brave battle with cancer."

He first portrayed Bond in 1973's 'Live and Let Die' and followed that film up with 'The Man With the Golden Gun', 'The Spy Who Loved Me', 'Moonraker', 'For Your Eyes Only', 'Octopussy' and 'A View To A Kill'. He is currently the longest-serving actor as 007, having spent 12 years in the role.

In the 1950s he starred in shows such as 'Ivanhoe', 'The Alaskans' and 'Maverick'. During the 60's he rose to stardom, taking on the lead role of Simon Templar in the TV show 'The Saint'. He then teamed up with Tony Curtis for 'The Persuaders!', which featured the adventures of two millionaire playboys across Europe.

The actor also made appearances in "Cannonball Run" and TV's "The Muppet Show," and appeared in the 2002 comedy "Boat Trip." In 2004 he lent his voice to the animated short "The Fly Who Loved Me."
