Variety reports that Sony Pictures execs have been analyzing renderings of a female superhero who will reside within the SPIDER-MAN universe. The film, set for a 2017 release, is considered a "passion project" for Sony co-chairman Amy Pascal. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce.

With a script by Lisa Joy, no details have been revealed as to which female character the film will be based, but candidates include Black Cat, Silver Sabler and Dazzler.

Marvel recently announced that they will introduce a female 'Thor'. In addition, the Scarlett Johansson-led 'Lucy', centering on a female hero, has performed well at the box office.

Reports of a film following Black Widow have also recently circulated. Writer Nicole Perlman took to Twitter Monday to clarify her involvement with the Marvel character, explaining "Hey folks, before rumors get out of hand: I wrote a treatment for Black Widow in 2010/2011, but I am not actively developing it right now."
