Back in the day, live television wasn't limited to Saturday night comedy shows, news, sports and the occasional Broadway musical. It was the norm.

But live animation? That's something a little different.

Perhaps inspired by the success of GREASE: LIVE, FOX has announced that the May 15th episode of its mega-hit animated series, THE SIMPSONS, now in its 27th season, will include a three-minute live animation segment. The bit will have the show's slovenly patriarchal figure, Homer Simpson, voiced, as always, by Dan Castellaneta, discussing topical subjects and responding to fan questions. The segment will air live on both the East and West Coast broadcasts.

"As far as I know, this is the first time that's been done by any animated show," the program's showrunner, Al Jean tells The Hollywood Reporter. ""And Dan is a great improviser."

The plot of the May 15th episode will deal with improv comedy and fans are urged to tweet their questions using the hashtag #HomerLive beginning Sunday, May 1, through Wednesday, May 4.
