Enjoy A Brazil-iant Night At The Movies As Brazilica Reveal Its 2018 Film Festival Programme

Brazilica organiser Liverpool Carnival Company is delighted to announce the return of its popular Film Festival for 2018, bringing the very best of Brazilian cinema to venues across Liverpool.

Film buffs can enjoy 8 films celebrating Brazilian life and culture, which will be screened at various venues across the city from16 - 30 July.

The films cover a wide variety of genres including comedy, drama, BIOGRAPHY and documentaries - with something on offer for all to enjoy.

Brazilica Film Festival will begin at FACT on Monday 16 July with Elis a biopic portraying the life of Elis Regina, one of Brazil's greatest singers. Elis charts the singers RISE to fame from a humble beginning to a national success.

Samba and Jazz: Rio de Janeiro is the order of the day at The Bombed Out Church on Tuesday 17 July. The documentary film draws a parallel between the two rhythms, the passion for music and the popular manifestations that evolves the universes of Samba and Jazz in Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans.

Camp and Furnace plays host to Estómago - A Gastronomic Story on Thursday 19 July. A cunning man discovers the way to the worlds good graces is through people's stomachs in this witty drama.

Olhando Para As Estrelas/Looking at the Stars asks what it means to ask someone to look at the stars, inviting viewers in to the world of Geyza, a blind prima ballerina who attended a special ballet academy in Sao Paulo Brazil. The documentary will be screened at Baltic Creative The Pod on Saturday 21 July.

The film festival returns to The Bombed Out Church on Monday 23 July for Tudo Que Aprendemos Juntos/The Violin Teacher. The movie tells the story of a talented violinist whose life takes a difficult turn when he fails to be admitted to the OSESP Orchestra but the transforming power of music and the friendship arising between the teacher and the students open the door into a new world.

Aquarius tells the story of the last resident in a 1940s building with developers moving in. Watch as tensions grow between the protagonist and the developers as she reflects on her loved ones, her past and her future, on Tuesday 24 July at FACT.

On Thursday 26 July docu-fiction hybrid Era O Hotel Cambridge / Cambridge Hotel comes to Brazilica Barracao at Old Library Lodge Lane. The piece charts the trials, tribulations and triumphs of homeless Brazilians and refugees that squat together in an abandoned Sao Paulo hotel. A political charged film which tackles the issues of homelessness and elevates it into something universal and urgently contemporary.

Finally, Brazilica Film Festival is working in association with Liverpool Pride Festival to present Divinas Divas/Divine Divas. The film, which portrays eight Brazilian performers and drag artists of the 1960s who revolutionised sexual behaviour and challenged at the height of a military dictatorship, will be shown on Monday 30 July at Output Gallery.

Film Festival Programmer Moulay Drissi commented:

"This year's selection has the whole gamut of emotion. Cinema lovers will enjoy an eclectic offer from the high calibre documentaries and feature films. Brazilian cinema is so fascinating and increasingly attractive to a global audience as well as being such a great medium for exploring Brazil's culture."
