The Glimmerglass Festival Announces Events for 2014

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - Since the appointment of Artistic & General Director Francesca Zambello in 2010, The Glimmerglass Festival has grown the number of events presented during its summer season, with concerts, lectures, question-and-answer sessions and more supplementing its core calendar of four mainstage productions.

In 2014, the Central New York opera and musical theater festival will focus on the last 100 years of music, with new mainstage productions of Puccini's Madame Butterfly, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, Strauss' Ariadne in Naxos and Tobias Picker's An American Tragedy. The productions will run in repertory July 11 through August 24, and many of the Festival's complementary events will explore the music of the last century, including two new public master classes.

Legendary soprano Jessye Norman will join the company for a public master class on August 8, with members of the company's Young Artists Program performing in the company's Alice Busch Opera Theater. Famed opera and theater director Jonathan Miller will also work with members of the apprentice program in a public master class July 25.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will return for her third appearance at The Glimmerglass Festival on July 19, when she will share her passion for opera and her unique perspective on law in the arts. The program will take place in the Alice Busch Opera Theater and will feature a lively balance of performance and commentary, with members of the Young Artists Program enacting selected scenes that deal with law and justice.

2014 Artist in Residence Christine Goerke, whose recent performances at the Metropolitan Opera garnered high praise, will perform a concertAugust 15, returning to perform on the same stage where she began her career as a Young Artist more than 20 years ago. As Artist in Residence, Goerke will work with members of the Young Artists Program throughout the summer in addition to performing the title role in Ariadne in Naxos.

Also on the calendar, members of the Young Artists Program will perform a concert of bel canto favorites August 17 in the Alice Busch Opera Theater. A testament to the opportunities offered by the training program, on August 3 Young Artists will perform the principal roles in a special performance of Madame Butterfly.

ShowTalk is the company's lecture series featuring discussions with eminent scholars and artists paired with live performances by members of the Young Artists Program. These events will take place at the Otesaga Resort Hotel in Cooperstown. As the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates its 75th anniversary, the company will partner with the Hall of Fame to explore the parallels of opera and baseball with a discussion by Emmy Award-winning Mark Schubin on August 2. Other topics include composer Kyle Gann on 100 years of music on August 9alongside a discussion on Crime & Punishment, Politics & Class in An American Tragedy, as well as Music Director Joseph Colaneri on Puccini and John Julius Norwich on Ariadne in Naxos on August 16.

The Meet Me at the Pavilion series continues in 2014. With ticket prices ranging from $10 to $20, these brief cabaret-style performances occur throughout the summer in an intimate venue next to the mainstage and feature both guest performers and Young Artists in programs entitled "Gent's Night Out," "Ladies' Night Out," "100 Years of Music" and "75 Years of the Baseball Hall of Fame." Free opportunities also abound with pre-show previews, backstage tours, question-and-answer sessions with the cast and the opportunity to watch changeovers, when the production crew changes the scenery from one show to the next.

"You can fill your day - or two or three days - with events dedicated to music and the arts," Zambello said. "And then, I urge you to enjoy the untouched beauty of this area. Swim in the lake, hike in the local parks or check out the local farmers' markets. This is truly a destination to be enjoyed."

The Festival will continue to collaborate with Fenimore Art Museum and historic Hyde Hall. More information will be announced in the coming months.
