The Chattanooga Symphony & Opera opens its 2013/14 season with a free community concert, An American Salute and an homage to The Planets.

The Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park will be commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Civil War battles in a free Pops in the Park concert on Saturday, September 21 at 7:00pm at the Wilder Brigade Monument on the Chickamauga battlefield. Residents and visitors are invited to converge on the grounds with blankets, camp chairs, picnic baskets and a taste for stirring American music. The concert will be conducted by CSO Music Director Kayoko Dan.

The 2013/14 Volkswagen Series kicks off with a similar salute to American music in a program today, September 22 at 3:00pm at the Volkswagen Conference Center. Music Director Kayoko Dan will offer up a variety of patriotic tunes from Sousa and Copland as well as music featured in classic American movies.

The official 'opening night' of the 2013/14 Barnett & Company Masterworks Series is Thursday, September 26 at 7:30pm at the Tivoli Theatre and features popular 20th Century works. Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man was written as a stirring musical tribute to those engaged in World War II, creating a fanfare that was traditional, direct and powerful. Copland's Pulitzer Prize-winning orchestral suite, Appalachian Spring, takes us on a journey of 19th century American pioneers in Spring, inspired by the Shaker hymn, Simple Gifts. The concert closes with an exploration of The Planets, Holst's musical focus on the astrological aspects long associated with the planets and their mythological namesakes. Video imagery will accompany the works.

Single tickets to the entire 2013/14 season are available online at www.chattanoogasymphony.org, by calling 423.267.8583 or in person at 701 Broad Street in the Tivoli Center. Subscriptions to any of the regular concert series are still on sale, including a three- or five-concert choose your own series.
