VIDEO: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' 'Same Love' Supports Marriage Equality, Breaks Ground in Top 40

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the rap duo with No. 1 hits "Thrift Shop" and "Can't Hold Us", are breaking new ground with their single, "Same Love".

According to The New York Times, the track is "the first song to explicitly embrace and promote gay marriage that has made it into the Top 40". "Same Love" rose to No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart on June 26th, the same day the Supreme Court overturned DOMA and Proposition 8.

Macklemore told the Times that he wrote "Same Love" in support of his two gay uncles and gay godfather in Seattle, and that he thought rap music's rampant homophobia needed to be addressed: "I just wanted to hold myself accountable, and hold hip-hop accountable and bring up an issue that was being pushed under the rug," he said.
