New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) presents Day Of Swing. Come and celebrate the spirit of swing and the roots of Jazz and Laissez les bon temps roulez! The Day of Swing Community Festival will include:

- Performance excerpts and master classes from Jazz greats including Christian McBride and Stefon Harris
- Open jam sessions featuring the Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens students and faculty
- Visual art projects inspired by New Orleans
- DANCE: Congo Square, tap, and lindy hop

Day of Swing Workshop Schedule

YOUNG LEARNERS:
Tiny Tappers - Groove to the beat and explore the beginnings of Tap Dance. This workshop is geared for the littlest toes, encouraging children to move their bodies in imaginative ways with rhythm, sound, and song.
Explore-A-Jazz Story: Louis Armstrong - Discover the roots of jazz, celebrate Armstrong's influence through music, movement and creative storytelling.
Jazz Orff Music Playroom - Kids can swing and bop to the story of jazz through improvisation and interactive play on tambourines, Orff xylophones, congas, recorders and shakers.

ALL AGES/FAMILY WORKSHOPS:
The Soul of New Orleans through photos - Explore the cultural soul of New Orleans through the photography of NJPAC's resident photographer Norman DeShong as he shows the beauty and resilience of New Orleans over the past decade.
Visual Art Project: Mardi Gras Mask Making - Designed for all ages, in this hands-on workshop you can create, decorate and learn more about the mask making traditions of New Orleans through the eyes of your own mask.
Visual Art Project: Jazz Mosaics - Help create a mosaic of a New Orleans jazz club replete with musicians and architecture reflecting the wonders of New Orleans.
Lindy Hop Dance Workshop - Learn not only the basic steps, but the Lindy Hop's history and elegance. Later, demonstrate your new skills as we parade through the building and spill out onto the street with live music accompaniment by NJPAC'S jazz faculty.
The Roots of Jazz: Congo Square - Trace the roots of Jazz in the songs, dances and drum beats of the African slaves in this interactive workshop.

DEVELOPING ARTIST:
Listen & Learn: New Orleans Style: Ol' School - Sit in and learn the roots of jazz music from its humble beginnings in New Orleans in the late 1800's to its adolescence during the roaring twenties migrating from the South to the North and Midwest .
Listen & Learn: New Orleans Style: New School - New Orleans continues to influence Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop as new artists step into the spotlight. Listen and learn about the modern masters of New Orleans music.
Legacy of Louis Armstrong - Join us for an interactive workshop to explore Satchmo's early beginnings as a New Orleans native, his innovations to jazz music and his lasting legacy as an American Icon.
From Second Lines to Marching Bands - In this interactive workshop, participants will learn the parallel relationship between Second Lining and traditional marching bands. Join us at the end of the day for our own Community Second Line to end the day with a bang.
Maker: Music Arranging - In this interactive workshop, learn the basics of arranging music with the guidance of Jazz for Teens faculty. Add some new tools to your toolbox as you reinterpret a piece of music to make it your own.
Get an insider's look from working professionals and jazz faculty from the Wells Fargo Jazz for Teens program as they discuss management, marketing, radio air play, music production and more.

MASTERCLASSES:
Master Class with Christian McBride
Acclaimed bassist Christian McBride, NJPAC's Jazz Advisor, offers students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to achieve a deeper understanding of jazz and blues.
Stefon Harris Master Class- Acclaimed vibraphonist and NJPAC's Artistic Director for Jazz Stefon Harris will share his vast knowledge as an Educator and Musician as he debuts his new Educational App which blends the best of Jazz Theory and technology in a harmony.
Jazz and Tap - Swingin' and Hoofin' in Harmony - Explores the percussive side of tap when the dancer acts as a member of the band and improvises over the beat of a live band.
Singer's Workshop: How to Scat - This interactive workshop, featuring the assistance of a live band, will explore the art of Scat singing first made famous by Louis Armstrong, but taken to its zenith by vocalists Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.

PERFORMANCES:
A Touch of Jackson Square - Bring your best jazz standards, step up to the mic and jam with a live band featuring our Jazz for Teens students and faculty.
Youth Jazz Jam -Bring your instrument of choice or be an active and supportive audience and join our Jazz for Teens student ensembles as they jam out on their favorite selections from the era when jazz was king.
Kids Swing Concert: What is Dixieland Jazz? - The Jazz for Teens faculty demonstrate the lively sounds of New Orleans Jazz.
Hoofers Jam - Lace up your tap shoes, and shuffle -ball - change to the beat of a live jazz band as we call out all hoofer to dance to the beat of an open Hoofers jam.
