Renowned jazz violinist Regina Carter will join the highly regarded OU Jazz Quartet on Sunday, Feb. 3, to perform a family-oriented concert featuring themes from popular movies including "Toy Story," "Toy Story 2," "Cars," "Star Wars," "Monsters Inc." and "The Little Mermaid."

Carter, a Grammy nominee and a 2006 recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, is an OU alumna and a native of Detroit. She combines a dazzling technical proficiency with a fresh approach to her instrument and a multicultural perspective.

As an artist-in-residence at the university, Carter returns each year to teach master classes and to perform. For this performance, she has invited audience members both young and old to come dressed in a movie character costume. Those under 12 who do so will be admitted to the concert free of charge.

The event, set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 3, will take place in Varner Recital Hall on the campus of Oakland University. Maps of the campus are available at oakland.edu/map or by searching for "Varner Hall" on a smart phone. Ample free parking will be available.

Tickets are $20 for general admission, $10 for students, and $6 for children 12 and under who choose not to wear costumes. Tickets can be purchased in advance with no service fees at startickets.com or by phone at (800) 585-3737. They can also be purchased at the Center for Student Activities Service Window in the Oakland Center or at the Varner Hall Box Office. Complete ticket information is available at oakland.edu/tickets.
