JLo, Thalia to Play Gloria Estefan in Broadway-Bound Musical?
According to LatinoFox News, international singers Thalía and Jennifer Lopez are both currently under consideration to take on the role of Gloria Estefan in a new musical heading to Broadway.
Back in February, the Nederlander Organization and Estefan Enterprises jointly announced that they are in the process of developing and producing the project, currently titled 'Do That Conga,' which is inspired by the music made famous by the International superstar and her husband musician/producer and entrepreneur Emilio Estefan. The musical will be set in a way that tells the Estefans' riveting life story detailing their journey all the way from Cuba to superstardom.
"I am thrilled to collaborate with Gloria and Emilio to see their amazing story come to fruition on the Broadway stage," said Jimmy Nederlander, President of the Nederlander Organization in making the announcement. "The Estefans' journey of success, led by raw talent and passion, is captivating as it drove them from relative obscurity to global sensations."
According to earlier rumors, the Estefans' first choice for the lead role would be international recording artist and soap opera star Thalia. However, others reportedly in the running include former American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez and Columbian singer-songwriter, Fanny Lu. Actors being considered for the role of Emilio Estefan include Chayanne, Carlos Ponce and William Levy.
In an interview in today's People Magazine, Estefan notes that the musical will be both a love story and a tale of persistence. "There are so many story lines," she says. "It's a universal story, it's an immigrant story, and it's a love story. In the United States, if you believe in yourself and you're determined and persevere, you're going to succeed."
