Grammy-Nominated Quintet Imani Winds Coming to Oakland University 3/12

For twenty years, Imani Winds has taken a unique path, carving out a distinct presence in the classical music world with its dynamic playing, culturally poignant programming, adventurous collaborations and inspirational outreach programs.

The Grammy-nominated wind quintet will perform as part of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit at Oakland University series on Sunday, March 12 at 3 p.m., in Varner Recital Hall on the Oakland University campus.

Imani Winds plays music that bridges European, American, African and Latin American traditions and their touring schedule has taken them across the globe.

In the U.S., they have performed at such major venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Disney Hall and Kimmel Center, as well as on university performing arts series, chamber music series and at major festivals across the country.

Abroad, Imani Winds has toured China, Singapore, Brazil, Australia and throughout Europe, from the Paris Jazz Festival to London's Wigmore Hall.

They are the Ensemble-in-Residence at the University of Chicago.

The program, "Tradition and Innovation" will include:

· Midsummer Night's Dream by Mendelssohn, arranged by Gabler

· Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov, arranged by Russell

· Prelude, Theme and Variations from Quintet for Winds, Op. 43 by Carl Nielsen

· Kites by Paquita d'Rivera

· Dance Mediterranea by Simon Shaheen
