The great conductor Claudio Abbado and his hand-picked Orchestra Mozart continue their critically-acclaimed series of recordings for Deutsche Grammophon with two of Mozart's most inspired works for multiple wind instruments and orchestra. This series of recordings has already included various symphonies, the violin concertos with Giuliano Carmignola and the horn concertos. Now Abbado turns his attention to works for winds and orchestra culminating with the Sinfonia concertante for Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn and Orchestra in E flat major K. 297b. This new release will be available January 10, 2012.

In 1778 Mozart was in Paris and while he may not have achieved the grand success many expected of him, the time period is notable for a number of compositions. Not least among these are two works for winds and orchestra: the Sinfonia concertante and the Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra. By coincidence, at the time Mozart was in Paris a number of his Old Acquaintances from Mannheim were also there. This fact combined with the Paris Concert Spirituel – a pioneering institution in the lives of the city’s middle-class music lovers which was similar to the aristocratic salon but open to the general public – led to the creation of the Sinfonia concertante. The Mannheim players’ virtuosity inspired Mozart to write a work that is both charming and deceptively complex.

These delightful works, seemingly heard more often on recording than in the concert hall, receive masterful performances from Abbado, his soloists and the Orchestra Mozart. The ensemble, praised for its refined technical and musical abilities, has worked tirelessly with Abbado to perfect a classical style which has prompted Gramophone to state: “There is something that simply feels absolutely right about Abbado’s Mozart.”

In the past few years Abbado and the Orchestra Mozart have released no less than five new recordings of symphonies and concertos and have consistently earned critical praise for their lithe and well-poised readings. The recording of these two charming works continues the well-established series with additional releases to come later in the year.
