This past weekend, 35,000 attendees flocked to Burl's Creek Event Grounds for the inaugural WayHome Music and Arts festival. With performances by artists such as Neil Young + Promise of the Real, Kendrick Lamar, Sam Smith, Modest Mouse and Broken Social Scene; organizers and festival-goers alike are hailing the event as a huge success.
With a detailed and efficient traffic plan in place, the OPP and Oro-Medonte Fire Department reported no major incidents. Burl's Creek and its partners were able to keep Ridge Road clear of event traffic, and also ensured there was no overflow onto Hwy. 11 at any point throughout the festival. Burl's Creek was even able to deploy four ambulances to support the community, resulting in faster response times. Local business owners also reported a significant increase in foot traffic and sales. "We've always stated the importance of utilizing two lines (7 and 9) for traffic control and public safety. To watch this plan work so successfully is very pleasing," said Ryan Howes, vice-president of operations and business development, Burl's Creek Event Grounds. "I'm also happy to report that our traffic, health and safety were well considered and effective at mitigating risk to attendees."
