Earlier this year, former "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken officially announced his campaign to run for U.S. Congress, representing North Carolina's 2nd congressional district. The Broadway star revealed that he will seek the Democratic nomination for the seat currently held by Rep. Renee Ellmers.

In today's Democratic Congressional election, Gawker.com is reporting that Aiken is currently enjoying a slim lead over his opponent, former North Carolina Commerce Secretary Keith Crisco and is ahead by a narrow 372 votes with all precincts already reporting, leaving the race too close to call at this point.

The winner will face the incumbent, Tea Party Republican Renee Ellmers, in November's general election.

Aiken, who was a teacher of special education in Wake County believes that Washington is currently in a dysfunctional state, and if he wins the seat, plans to focus his time in office on improving jobs and the economy while emphasizing the importance of education.
