Annual Emory Jazz Fest to Return Feb 6-8 with Master Classes, Concerts and More

The annual Emory Jazz Fest returns February 6-8 with performances, public master classes and an open rehearsal.

On Thursday, February 6 at 8 p.m., Big Band Night features performances by Emory Big Band and the Faculty Jazz Band. The faculty ensemble will be debuting their new CD "Professors at Play," which will be available for purchase at the show.

Barbara Morrison and the Gary Motley Trio (Gary Motley, piano; Rodney Whitaker, bass; and Terreon Gully, percussion) collaborate with the Emory University Symphony Orchestra on Friday, February 7 at 8 p.m. Motley is the Director of Jazz Studies at Emory. Morrison and the Gary Motley Trio will also participate in three public events over the course of Jazz Fest:

• Thursday, February 6, 10 a.m.: Improvisational Jazz Class with the Gary Motley Trio in the Tharp Rehearsal Studio.
• Thursday, February 6, 2:30 p.m.: Vocal master class led by Morrison, featuring the Gary Motley Trio, in Emerson Concert Hall.
• Friday, February 7, 1:30 p.m.: Open Rehearsal with Morrison and the Gary Motley Trio in the Emerson Concert Hall.

On Saturday, February 8, at 8 p.m. The Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 tour will close out the festival as part of the 2013-2014 Candler Concert Series. The ensemble of renowned artists, led by clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen, will perform a repertoire spanning the ages, from Louis, Duke and Miles to Latin, Brazilian and fusion. The world-class ensemble includes multi-GRAMMY Award nominated vocalist Karrin Allyson; five-time GRAMMY Award winning trumpeter Randy Brecker, versatile guitarist Mark Whitfield and an A-list rhythm section featuring pianist Peter Martin, drummer Clarence Penn and bassist Larry Grenadier.

The Big Band Night on Thurs., Feb. 6 and the daytime events are free. Tickets for the Gary Motley Trio with Barbara Morrison are $20; $15 for discount category members and $5 for Emory students.

Single concert tickets for Newport Jazz Festival: Now 60 are $50; $40 for discount category members and $10 for Emory students.
