TED, the debut film from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, led the weekend box office, while breaking the record for best opening for an original R-rated comedy previously held by The Hangover. The film earned $54.1 million from 3,239 locations, which bests The Hangover's $44.98 million for its debut weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, among all R-rated movies it ranks eighth of all-time, and third among comedies behind The Hangover Part II and Sex and the City.

The Channing Tatum-starring male stripper film Magic Mike, earned $39.1 million, putting it in second place for the weekend. Last weekend's No. 1 film, Brave, brought in $34.01 million at No. 3. At No. 4, Madea's Witness Protection premiered to $26.3 million. In fifth was Madagascar 3 with $11.8 million.

Rounding out the top 10: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (No. 6, $6 million); Prometheus (No. 7, $4.9 million); Moonrise Kingdom (No. 8, $4.8 million), Snow White and the Huntsman (No. 9, $4.4 million) and the new Chris Pine-Elizabeth Banks dramedy People Like Us (No. 10, $4.3 million).
