The Hollywood Reporter writes that Peter Sarsgaard and Winona Ryder have signed on to star in the upcoming indie drama EXPERIMENTER, THE STANLEY MILGRAM STORY, written and directed by Michael Almereyda.

EXPERIMENTER is based on "the true story of famed social psychologist Stanley Milgram, who in 1961 designed the controversial Obedience Experiments at Yale University, observing the responses of ordinary people who believed they were sending harmful electrical shocks to an affable stranger. The experiments were about conformity and authority, and their implications continue to be deeply unsettling and resonant. But this was just the start of a wide-ranging career for Milgram, who also came up with the Small-World Experience, the basis for Six Degrees of Separation."

Sarsgaard will star as Milgram, with Ryder as his student and love interest, Sasha Menkin. Also in the cast are Josh Hamilton, Jim Gaffigan, Dennis Haysbert and Danny A. Abeckaser.

Sarsgaard's upcoming big screen projects include Pawn Sacrifice, Ladygrey and Prima. Among his recent film credits are Night Moves, Blue Jasmine, Lovelace, Very Good Girls, Robot & Frank, Green Lantern and more. He has also recently appeared in the TV series The Killing. The actor starred on Broadway in The Seagull in 2008, as well as off-Broadway's Hamlet, Three Sisters, Uncle Vanya, Burn This, Kingdom of Earth and Laura Dennis.

Ryder's film credits include Homefront, Frankenweenie, The Iceman, Black Swan, Zoolander, Girl, Interrupted, The Crucible, Little Women, Edward Scissorhands, Heathers, Beetlejuice and more.
