According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leighton Meester will not reprise her role of Carrie Bishop in the highly anticipated VERONICA MARS big screen adaptation. Creator Rob Thomas announced the news on Sunday.

The 'Gossip Girl' actress guest appeared in two episodes of the television series' freshman season. Her character made her first appearance in the "Mars vs. Mars" episode in which she stirs up trouble by accusing a teacher of having an affair with her.

In an e-mail to those who contributed to the film's record breaking Kickstarter campaign, Thomas cited scheduling conflicts as the reason Meester could not participate in his project."Sadly, Leighton was doing a different movie during the same time frame on the wrong coast," he wrote. "In the end, she was unavailable."

He continued, "One of the reasons I wanted Leighton, beyond her talent/beauty/history in the show, was that we needed a performer who could sing in this important role. Once it became evident that we couldn't make Leighton's schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie."

As a result, Thomas has cast Andrea Estella, lead singer of the band Twin Sister, in the role, explaining that he is a big fan of her group and their music. "[Estella] has an amazing voice; I can't get enough of it," he shared.

Thomas also revealed that at least two of the band's songs will be featured in the film.

Estella will join previously announced cast members Kristen Bell, Jason Dohring, Percy Daggs III, Chris Lowell, TINA MAJORINO, Ryan Hansen and Enrico Colantoni in the film.
