Empty moves (parts I, II & III) will be the first collaboration between the Ballet Preljocaj and The Joyce Theater since their April 2014 engagement of Snow White, which The Joyce presented at Lincoln Center. This provocative contemporary ballet, choreographed by Artistic Director, Angelin Preljocaj, is set to a live recording of John Cage's "Empty Words" during a 1977 performance in Milan. In this performance, Cage produced atonal sounds through a reading of the journals of author Henry David Thoreau. This caused the audience to throw insults at him, even climbing onto the stage to shout into his microphone to make him stop, however he continued unaffected until the end of the performance.

Empty moves (parts I, II & III) mirrors Cage's "Empty Words" in its commitment to form, with the dancers building a rich movement vocabulary that integrates timing, weight share, dynamics, precision, and sensuality, never stopping or becoming distracted by anything that may happen during a performance.

Empty moves (part I) was first created in 2004, commissioned by Biennale nationale de danse du Val-de-Marne with coproduction by The Joyce Theater's Stephen and Cathy Weinroth Fund for New Work. It was followed by (part II) in 2007, with Empty moves (parts I, II & III) premiering in its entirety at the Festival Montpellier Dance in 2014 at the Théâtre de la Ville-Paris.

Performances of Ballet Preljocaj will take place from April 20 to April 24 at The Joyce Theater (175 Eighth Avenue at 19th Street) according to the following schedule: Wednesday at 7:30pm; Thursday-Saturday at 8:00pm; Sunday at 2:00pm. Curtain Chat, a free post-performance talkback with the artists, will take place on Thursday, April 21. This enlightening discussion is open to all patrons attending that evening's performance. Tickets range in price from $20-$60 and can be purchased at www.Joyce.org, or by calling JoyceCharge at 212-242-0800. Please note: ticket prices are subject to change.
