Nashville Theater Calendar 6/15/15

Sometimes it seems there is so much theater happening that it's difficult to keep track of it all. From personal experience, despite all the datebooks, smart phones, tablets, desktop computers and laptops...it's hard to keep everything straight in this wacky business of the show.

Thus, we are happy to present a new feature: The Nashville Theater Calendar, a comprehensive - maybe even exhaustive (lord knows we're exhausted from putting it together, gathering all the info from all over the interwebs!) - listing of theatrical openings for the 2015/16 season. We'll update the calendar every Monday, clearing out the shows that have closed and adding additional information on the shows still to come. Something's missing? Cumberland County Playhouse, Crossville: Singin' in the Rain, running through July 12 www.ccplayhouse.com "Singin' in the Rain is set in the Roaring Twenties when handsome, dashing Don Lockwood and his glamorous co-star Lina Lamont were the brightest stars in Hollywood. But times change, and 1927's advent of 'talking pictures' caused the crash of careers and fortunes, as audiences quickly lost interest."

Cumberland County Playhouse, Crossville: Smoke on the Mountain, running through October 10 www.ccplayhouse.com Smoke takes place on a Saturday night in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, and the Reverend Oglethorpe has invited the Sanders Family Singers to provide an uplifting evening of song. The audience becomes the congregation as two dozen traditional and original hymns weave together with stories of witness from family members, along with a healthy dose of laughter. Though the Sanders Family try to appear perfect in the eyes of a critical congregation - who are skeptical about the whole notion of a "Saturday Night Sing" - one thing after another goes awry and they reveal their true and hilariously imperfect natures. The honesty, humor (sometimes unintentional!) and faith of this Southern mountain family and the church's new preacher connect strongly with audiences of all ages and faiths, who find themselves part of a very special afternoon or evening.

The Larry Keeton Theatre, Donelson/Nashville: Guys & Dolls, running through June 20 www.thelarrykeetontheatre.org Guys and Dolls was conceived by producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin. Weaving together the short stories "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown", "Blood Pressure" and "Pick the Winner," these gentlemen began the process for what has been called the perfect musical. Using Damon Runyon's classics from the 20's and 30's they hired a crack team to musicalize and comically homogenize Runyon's work. With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, the result was a 1950 Broadway blockbuster. Still employing Runyon's style of mixing highly formal language with colloquial slang, Loesser, Swerling and Burrows, created a funny send up of the gangsters, gamblers, showgirls of New York City's underworld and nightclubs.

Pull Tight Players, Franklin: The Dixie Swim Club, running through June 20 www.pull-tight.com Each August, five Southern ladies leave the trappings and demands of their lives behind and convene at a beach cottage in the Outer Banks of North Carolina to recharge their strong bond. The Dixie Swim Club looks in on four of those weekends over a 33-year history, catching up with spunky Sheree, overachieving Dinah, pampered Lexie, self-deprecating Vernadette and sweet Jeri as they help keep each other afloat in the sometimes deep end of life's pool. Playwrights Jones, Hope and Wooten fill The Dixie Swim Club with some of their most complex characters in this funny and poignant cap to our season.

Street Theatre Company, Nashville, at Bailey Middle School: Dogfight, running through June 21 www.streettheatrecompany.org Written by talented young writers Ben Pasek, Justin Paul, and Peter Duchan, the hauntingly beautiful Dogfight won the Lucille Lortell award for Best Musical. Set in the 1960s at the start of the Vietnam War, Dogfight takes audiences on a romantic and heartbreaking theatrical journey. On the eve of their deployment, three young Marines set out for one final boys' night of debauchery, partying, and maybe a little trouble. But when Corporal Eddie Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion. Studded with breathtakingly beautiful songs, an unexpected love affair, and genuine soul, it's no wonder this charming musical continues to wow audiences and critics alike.

Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre, Nashville: Nobody's Perfect, running through July 19 www.dinnertheatre.com Love Is All Around is a feminist publishing house and Harriet Copeland is in charge of their competition to attract new authors of romantic fiction called "For Women By Women." To defeat this gender bias, Leonard Loftus submits his novel under a pseudonym - Lullabel Latifa. He wins first prize and the once bashful statistician with a spectacular alter ego is suddenly a very worried man in the guise of a carefree woman. His wayward daughter and rascally old father hilariously complicate his frantic attempts to maintain the Lullabel character. To make matters worse, he falls for Harriet and the madness goes from there!

Cumberland County Playhouse, Crossville: Mary Poppins, running through August 16 www.ccplayhouse.com Mary Poppins has captivated audiences for generations with its enchanting story, unforgettable songs and dazzling dance numbers. Mary Poppins is the story of a mysterious nanny who magically appears at the Banks household in Edwardian London to care for Jane and Michael Banks. Adventure abounds as she whisks them away to meet dancing chimney sweeps, shopkeepers and an array of colorful characters. NicoleBégué Hackmann will return to the Playhouse stage as Mary Poppins and Jake Delaney will play Bert.

Renaissance Players, Dickson: Shrek the Musical, running through June 28 www.renplayers.com "Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek..." And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek.

Towne Centre Theatre, Brentwood: Footloose, running through July 11 www.townecentretheatre.com Footloose is the perfect summer musical, a story of American spirit. A carefree kid is transplanted to a conservative rural town where Rock 'n' Roll and dancing are forbidden. He takes on the authorities, makes all the right moves and wins the girl. A high energy, high intensity musical that dances onto the stage from the very first song and keeps on rocking until the end. The cast is led by William Warren Carver as Ren McCormack and Lindsay Carter as Ariel Moore. Miss Jeanne's Theatre, Nashville: Red, White and Tuna, running through July 12 www.missjeannes.com The story's action begins as Tuna's citizens excitedly prepare for The Annual Fourth of July Celebration and Tuna High School Reunion. Before the fireworks display can be launched, the town must pick a Reunion Queen. Will the winner be Pearl Burras, local chicken farmer? Perhaps gun shop owner Didi Snavely will take the crown, or Smut Snatchers Vice President Vera Carp might be victorious, if her hairdo doesn't melt in the record-breaking heat. Poisoned potato salad, UFO sightings, and an attack cat are just a few of the many obstacles in the way of a successful town event.

The Arts at Center Street, at TPAC's James K. Polk Theatre, Nashville: Alien The Musical, running through July 26. Jimmy Dolan is loved by his brothers, honored by his foreman, esteemed by his community, and cherished by his wife and kids. In a world of struggle, where solutions to their present suffering are to advance careers and build wealth or criticize the powers and incite revolution, Jimmy sings another song. Set in New York in the late 1800's, a time when Irish immigrants, on average, lived six years after arriving in the new world, "ALIEN: The Musical" explores the tumultuous journey of the Dolan family during those initial years in New York, and follows their family's narrative into present-day California. It is there that their story intersects with "Mexican" immigrants who work in the kitchen of the newly opened "O'Neil's Irish Pub and Family Restaurant." When these two worlds collide, an unexpected twist plunges the Irish and Latinos into a conflict that makes us question what it means to be human; what it means to love and create a hospitable world for those who feel alienated by our ideals or sense of security.

Above all, though, Hydrogen Jukebox tries to portray the American People-a collective of individuals searching a better way towards understanding, meaning, and happiness in hectic and often confusing times. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action - the play tells the story of the Plantagenet family who are locked in a free for all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen, and wealthiest woman in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom, as well as King Henry's paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor says, "every family has its ups and downs," and this royal family is no exception.

Pull-Tight Players, Franklin: Holmes For The Holidays, running through December 19 www.pull-tight.com The halls are decked with murder this holiday season at the Connecticut manse of stage actor William Gillette. But whodunit? His mother, Martha? Or one of his fellow actor friends staying at Connecticut Castle for the Christmas weekend? Gillette has played Sherlock Holmes on stage, but now he had better play him in real life before the murderer strikes again.
