David Robertson will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Emanuel Ax as soloist, and two works inspired by Chinese fables: Stravinsky's The Song of the Nightingale and Barto?k's The Miraculous Mandarin Suite, Wednesday, January 28, 2015, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 30 at 11:00 a.m.; and Saturday, January 31 at 8:00 p.m.

David Robertson and Emanuel Ax previously appeared together at the Philharmonic in May 2008 and November 2004, the latter playing Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2. The New York Times wrote of the 2004 Chopin performance: "Mr. Robertson made the most of the orchestral music.... Mr. Ax played with exquisite lyricism, pearly tone and a deep sensitivity to the music's melancholy. For all the rippling brilliance of his pianism, every gesture, every scampering run or melodic embellishment had meaning."

Returning for his 123rd appearance with the Orchestra, the Polish-born pianist served as the Philharmonic's Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence during the 2012-13 season. He became an Honorary Member of the Philharmonic-Symphony Society of New York in April 2011 on the occasion of his 100th performance with the Orchestra.
