Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra Presents THE BRITISH ARE COMING!

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra kicks off its season with resplendent works by three of England's finest composers. William Walton wrote Crown Imperial: Coronation March for the crowning of Edward VIII in May 1937. When Edward VIII abdicated, the work was instead performed for his younger brother, George VI. Vaughan Williams wrote his Piano Concerto in C for pianist Harriet Cohen. Performed with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra by guest soloist Cristina Valdés, this virtuosic concerto pays homage to Bach while also expressing a percussive and exuberant energy. The program concludes with Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations in which each variation is inspired by and dedicated to Elgar's friends or loved ones.

Considered one of today's foremost interpreters of contemporary music, pianist Cristina Valdés is currently an Artist-in-Residence at the University of Washington. She has performed across four continents and in venues such as Lincoln Center, Le Poisson Rouge, Miller Theatre, Jordan Hall, and the Kennedy Center. An avid chamber musician and collaborator, Cristina has toured extensively with the Bang On a Can "All Stars", and has performed with the Seattle Chamber Players, the Mabou Mines Theater Company, the Parsons Dance Company, and Antares. She has also been a featured performer on both the Seattle Symphony's Chamber Series and [UNTITLED] concerts. Cristina has appeared as concerto soloist with the Johns Hopkins Symphony Orchestra, the Binghamton Philharmonic, the Seattle Philharmonic, the Eastman BroadBand, and the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra. Recently, she performed the piano solo part of the Ives 4th Symphony with the Seattle Symphony, which was released on CD earlier this year to critical acclaim.

Maestro Wesley Schulz, who has garnered attention for his fresh programming and imaginative performances is pleased to return for the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's 2016 - 2017 Season. In constant demand, Schulz is Music Director of the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Festival Orchestra and serves as Director of Orchestras at University of Puget Sound. In 2014-2015 Schulz was the Conducting Fellow at the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Since the beginning of his tenure in 2011, he has taken the orchestra and audience members on a dynamic musical journey showcasing winners from the Young Artist Concerto Competition, premiering works specifically commissioned for the BSO, collaborating with the Bainbridge Chorale and presenting side-by-side performances with the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestra, and enlisting a star-studded cast of guest performers for each four-concert season filled with masterworks, beloved favorites, and original compositions.

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra's opening concerts of the season are November 12 & 13, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m. A pre-concert chat is offered on Sunday, November 13 at 2:15 p.m. Tickets, $21 for adults, and $18 for seniors, students, military, and teachers, may be purchased online at www.bainbridgeperformingarts.org, by phone at 206.842.8569 or in person at BPA, 200 Madison Avenue North, Bainbridge Island.
