Yeo Hong Eng Releases New Memoir, THE LITTLE RED CLIFF

In "The Little Red Cliff: 1946-1963" (published by Trafford Publishing), Yeo Hong Eng's new book, readers will discover a story about a family struggling for survival by using the materials and resources from the land they work and their own ingenuities.

"The Little Red Cliff" tells the story of a family living in Tanah Merah Kechil (Little Red Cliff), a small corner of Bedok District along the eastern coast of Singapore in the 1950s and '60s. Readers will follow the family as they struggle to make a living during the lean years of the Japanese Occupation. Yeo gives detailed descriptions of what it meant to survive in this time, focusing on his family's traditional lifestyle of working in animal husbandry and vegetable cultivation, techniques passed down through generations of the Yeo family.

"I saw the ripples of the white foamy waves advancing towards the coast. And finally the panoramic view of whole stretch of the sea and coast. I was spellbound. No words could describe how I felt. The feeling was boosted by the cool sea-breeze brushing past me. I stood there rooted to the ground as I had never seen such a wonderful sight at such a height before. Later I realized that I was standing at the Little Red Earth Cliff which the early cartographer had named."

Yeo gives readers a nostalgic - or in the case of younger readers, educational - glimpse into the hardships of life during his childhood, but the book isn't all about struggle. He also includes descriptions of the celebrations, festivals and other forms of entertainment that he and his family engaged in to escape the sorrows of everyday life. "Today some of us may experience a little hardship and complain a lot," he says, "but the hardship they experience today may be only a fraction of what we experienced in the '50s and '60s."

About the Author

Yeo Hong Eng was born in Tanah Merah Kechil (Little Red Cliff) in 1946 immediately after the surrender of the Japanese Occupations. He retired after teaching in Singapore primary schools for 40 years. He is now teaching part-time as he concentrates on writing a second book and contributing articles to the Singapore Memory Projects.
