Unlike a broken leg or the common cold there is no single remedy or procedure for overcoming mental health disorders. This makes each individual's story with mental illness unique and deeply personal. Maria A. Mansfield openly shares her 10-year battle with depression, anxiety and bipolar II disorder in "Life is Worth Getting Better: A Faith-Based Journey of Recovery from Depression, Anxiety and Bipolar II Disorder."

In her debut memoir, Mansfield accounts her long-standing battle with mental illness, which came to a head with her family's overseas move. Mansfield candidly discusses her time in group and individual therapy where she worked for 18 months to overcome her mental illnesses. She also shares the renewed sense of faith she found while receiving treatment and how she relied on God's love to guide her through her struggles. Along the way, Mansfield pulls from her experiences to offer advice for those living with mental illness and their loved ones.

"Everyone faces their own distinctive battles when it comes to mental health, but the common thread among mental illness is the widespread effect it has on a person's life," Mansfield said. "With Life is Worth Getting Better, people get to see how deeply mental illness affected my life, but they also get to see how I overcame those challenges and relied on my faith as inspiration and motivation."

Mansfield fought to overcome her long struggle with mental illnesses and now looks to use her experiences to encourage others to start their own recovery process, relying on God's love and grace along the way. She discovered her life was worth getting better and now hopes to inspire others to see the same.
