BLOCK ISLAND, R.I.

For artist and author Ted Merritt, escaping the pressures of daily life on Block Island, Rhode Island, begins with a paintbrush and a canvas. His new book, "Escape of a Block Island Artist: An Autobiographical Introspection" (published by AuthorHouse), reflects on the idea of escapism and how art and island life have influenced Merritt's philosophies.

Organized into three sections, "Escape of a Block Island Artist" details Merritt's escapism methods. The first part is dedicated to escaping the pressures of the workday while the second part discusses music's ability to offer an escape route for listeners.

In the third part, Merritt analyzes Block Island as a home and a tourist escape destination and how it impacts him artistically. Merritt incorporates the island's history, traditions and identity as a tourist destination with his philosophical musings on art and life.

Merritt also includes original paintings that render escapism themes. He hopes his writings and art will encourage self-reflection in readers.
