HIGHLAND FALLS, N.Y.

Author Krishmatie Ridgeway presents readers with her new cultural-heritage novel, "Shivapriya's Dance: A Girl's Odyssey of Faith" (published by iUniverse), a coming-of-age story that explores how different societies treat women and the absence of resources available to them in certain cultural environments.

"Shivapriya's Dance" follows a young girl as she leaves her home in India to survive alone on the cruel streets of the Bronx, New York. Shivapriya was just a child when thugs murdered her parents in Kashmir. From that moment, she was raised by her grandfather - her Dada-ji - in an idyllic ashram deep in the Himalayas.

When their peaceful valley is threatened by outside forces, and the man Shivapriya is betrothed to dies after a mysterious accident, Dada-ji determines Shivapriya's life is also in peril. He arranges for her to travel to New York to start life anew. But, New York and her adopted family bring their own challenges, which test her Hindu faith.

"A person must continue to strive no matter what the odds are against her or how meager may be her skills or resources to bring to this task," Ridgeway says. "I would like readers to see that being a heroine needs to entail no more than trying to live a normal life, even in exceptional circumstances."
