Tonawanda, N.Y.

Author Constance Messer and her late husband, Reverend Stanley Messer, foster-parented a young refugee from Laos named Sonexay Chantasone. The new book "Searching for Love" (published by WestBow Press) is the story of Sonexay's escape from his war-torn homeland and his search for love, a new home and freedom.

When Sonexay is just a young boy, his parents are imprisoned by the Viet Cong. After 13 years on his own, he meets them briefly before following through with his plan to escape Laos for the neighboring Thailand with his friend, Phone.

Sonexay and Phone are imprisoned upon their arrival in Thailand. They are left wondering if they were able to escape their war-torn country only to die in jail. Finally they are freed, but Sonexay is left to his own devices when Phone finds his family in the refugee camp.

At 14, and with only a dozen English words in his vocabulary, Sonexay gets the rare opportunity to travel to America. He takes his chance, making the long voyage alone. Upon arriving in America, he is robbed; but he happily finds his way to his foster parents.

"Searching for Love" takes readers through Sonexay's long and arduous journey as a young teenager, all the way through to his happy marriage, and details raising his children in the freedom of the United States.
