WASHINGTON, Feb. 8, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ The following is being released by the National Press Club:

Event: Book Event with Rod Nordland of the New York Times to discuss his new book:"The Lovers" (Ecco/Harper Collins). Nordland will take questions and sign books afterthe discussion.

When: Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 6:30p.

Where:The National Press Club, 529 14 th Street NW, 13 th Floor
Washington, D.C. (Holeman Lounge).
The Club is 2 blocks from Metro Center.

Details:
Nordland, who is currently a correspondent-at-large for the Times, was the Kabul Bureau chief for three years. He is rarely in the states having spent most of his career overseas.

This book grew out of his newspaper reporting about a young couple who married despite being from different ethnic backgrounds. The Lovers were forced to flee and go into hiding to avoid her family which tried to conduct an honor killing. In the book, Nordland describes the media frenzy that grew up around this case and his own professional challenges as he found himself assisting them to escape. Readers will find Nordland's writing and storytelling top notch. He paints a harsh but realistic picture of life in Afghan society today.

As much as anything "The Lovers" is a book about women's rights in a very remote corner of the world and how despite the resources poured into Afghanistan very little has changed forwomen in particular.

People Magazine just named "The Lovers" one of its Best Books for 2016. The book has received strong reviews in the Boston Globe and the UK press among others.
