Renee Spivey Shares Entrepreneurial Journey in New Book
Huntsville, Texas resident Renee Spivey will be the first to tell you that she has come this far by faith and a lot of elbow grease. Spivey is one of 22 women doing just that in a new anthology featuring women of color and faith who are pursuing entrepreneurship as a means of providing for themselves and even building communities. The book, "When Women Become Business Owners" (Tymm Publishing, June 2015), is a compilation of stories and how-to chapters focused on inspiring other women to own businesses.
Renee Spivey talks about owning a marketing company, Literary Signature Services, as well as offers advice hard-earned on her journey. She says of the experience, "it hasn't been easy, and at times it seems as if everything is going wrong, but it has been rewarding and I look forward to continuing to learn, grow and be a successful entrepreneur."
Spivey accepted an invitation to be included, because she has a deep longing for other women vacillating about beginning a business or even fearful to know that if she can do it, anyone can. Her business, Literary Signature Services, has been operating for eight years and while she has known ups and downs, she has persevered - something she attributes to her faith.
"If it were not for my faith in God, I would not be here or have this story to tell. God kept me through a very rough time in my life, which turned out to be the best time in my life, even though I'm sure others would disagree. Through faith I have persevered, even when I couldn't, or can't, see how things are going to work out. Through faith I know that better days are ahead and even when the bad days come, God is still there, holding me in the palm of His hand and guiding me every step of the way."
Some contributors were attracted to self-employment as children, while others found themselves having to make a way out of no way after job losses, divorce and other catastrophes. A handful work day jobs and pursue their business ventures at night, and the majority work for themselves full-time. And they all, like Spivey, have been an example of courage often under fire.
