According to Mother Nature Network, 10 different species have been declared extinct in the last decade. Author R.C. Sturgis finds the rapid extinction of species especially disturbing when she considers how instrumental animals have been in shaping mankind's history.

Sturgis discusses the ways in which six different mammals have helped mankind throughout history in her new book, "The Mammals That Moved Mankind: A History of Beasts of Burden" (published by AuthorHouse UK).

Throughout "The Mammals That Moved Mankind," Sturgis follows the history of the six particular mammals that were domesticated to give man the mobility that took ideas, goods, techniques, religion and war across the world. The six are dogs, horses, cattle, camels, reindeer and elephants.

Sturgis hopes to reach the urbanized youth, as she believes they are unaware of the integral role the various beasts of burden played in history. Furthermore, she hopes that by making readers aware of these mammals' importance, people will also become more aware of the creatures facing extinction today - before it's too late.
