BRYN ATHYN, PA - A near-death experience in 2008 prompted renowned neurosurgeon and afterlife skeptic, Dr. Eben Alexander, to pen his Best-Selling book "Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife." Alexander will share his story and discuss religion and spirituality in the 21st Century and how they complement modern science on Sunday, April 6, in Bryn Athyn.

The event, sponsored by ANC Secondary Schools, Bryn Athyn College and NewChurch LIVE, will be held at Asplundh Field House, 2775 Buck Road, Bryn Athyn. The lecture by Alexander and book signing event will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by visiting newchurchgiving.org/proofofheaven or calling 267-502-4895.

As a trained neurosurgeon, Alexander had believed near-death experiences were fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress, and the "soul" was a product of brain chemistry.

All of that changed in November 2008 when Alexander slipped into a deep coma after contracting bacterial meningitis. His neocortex the part of the brain that controls thought and emotion (and what makes us human) became inactive and completely shut down.

As his family began to weigh the possibility of stopping treatment, Alexander beat the odds and awoke after seven days, describing his time spent on a vivid journey in the company of a spiritual guide. The experience profoundly changed his life, career and what he thought about God.

"Everything I had learned in four decades of study and work about the human brain, about consciousness, about the universe, and about what constitutes reality conflicted with what I'd experienced during those seven days in coma," he says.

Today Alexander is a doctor who believes true health can be achieved only when we realize God and the soul are real and death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.
