Author Linda Lonsdorf takes readers back into the gritty world of private investigators and murder mysteries in A Deadly Ruse. In her third entry into the genre of detective fiction, readers will join veteran private eye Doug Conrad as he gets to the bottom of a particularly dangerous case that will pit him against cold-blooded killers and hostage takers.

Conrad, whose exploits Lonsdorf chronicled in her previous novels, Family Threat and Evil Injustice, was an A+ investigator of repute in the Akron Police Department, who later moved on from government service to found Conrad Confidential, a nationally-recognized detective agency. He is hired to find those responsible for the murder of his client's elderly mother, but the case leads to nowhere until Eddie Flatt and Bobby Forwark - crooks who specialize in scamming aged widows - try to pull a fast one in a ladies' Bible study.

When things go awry, the duo ends up holed up in the Gospel Bible Church with fifty hostages, and an entire SWAT team surrounding them. One of the hostages is the mother of Donna Gifford, a former SWAT operator who now works as a detective for Conrad. She enters the church on her own, but soon finds her life in jeopardy. Through fear and anxiety, another woman ends up debilitating a hostage taker, which escalates the situation and creates a violent reaction.

At the same time, the grandmother of Barnabus Johnson, another Conrad detective, passes away. For over twenty years, she has held on to a secret that will be life-changing for him. The strands of the plot begin to intertwine, and on the first anniversary of her mother's murder, Taylor Conrad returns to the murder site while it is still dark, mistakenly believing that she is alone. When a large man with a weapon corners her, she finds herself fighting for dear life.

Danger abounds in A Deadly Ruse, innocent people will find themselves threatened by the vicious and the lawless, and it's up to Doug Conrad and his cadre of private eyes to save the day. Drama, action, suspense and mystery, this book will appeal to a broad variety of readers as Lonsdorf once again captures the spirit of people to survive and find hope.
