PASADENA, Texas

Author and retired police captain Herbert Smith recreates the most vivid and poignant memories from his life, beginning with his childhood and continuing through his successful career as a police officer, in his new memoir, "In My Lifetime: Early life and career of Police Captain Herbert Smith" (published by iUniverse). The book will be featured at the 2015 Los Angeles Book Fair, which takes place on April 18-19.

Born into a share-cropping family in Louisiana, Smith was the eighth child of nine and the first person in his family to graduate from high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation and served briefly in the Korean War before being honorably discharged.

Smith then chose to pursue a career in law enforcement. He aced his civil service test and excelled as a patrol officer, confronting, disarming and arresting many dangerous criminals. Through hard work and determination, Smith advanced all the way up the ranks, finally obtaining his position as captain, before retiring from the force after 28 years of service.

Smith's goal for the book is to create a living legacy for future generations. He aims to provide an insider's look at life on the force as well as entertain readers with amusing anecdotes from his personal and professional life.
