Watch out Rin Tin Tin. Look out Lassie. Here comes Babette, a little heroine who is part guardian angel and part surprising psychic. This beloved dog guides her family through the pitfalls of life by performing now scientifically documented abilities like earth quake prediction or identifying illness. "Babette's Pack" will appeal to animal lovers everywhere as they revel in the antics of an extraordinary little dog that make up the awesome turns of author Kathryn Walter's narrative

Science has discovered that dogs are far more intelligent than was formerly believed and that they have some talents that verge on mystical. Whether this is the human influence at work or part of the natural make-up of dogs is still being studied. Hilarious in places, the novel is also spiritual at times, and sometimes even enters the realm of supernatural as Babette does what many therapy dogs are trained to do but goes just a couple of steps further. Babette is the courageous heroine who does the unimaginable:

"There was the time Esmeralda and Babette had gone on an adventure around the block...Suddenly Babette returned to the apartment scratching frantically at the front door...When Esmeralda's mother answered the door she found Babette in a sun bonnet with a doll's diaper dragging behind her on one leg, prancing from one foot to the other, whining. She sped out the door with (Babette)...leading the way to find Esmeralda sitting in the middle of the street...Her mother (and Babette) had arrived in time to pull Esmeralda from the street before the seizure occurred..."

The starring characters are Kat, her husband Bob, along with baby Greta and Babette who set the stage for making an apex experience of the relationship between dogs and humans. Bob initially rescued Babette from sure death when she was being drowned in a river along with her little siblings by a heartless owner-she, alone, survived for Kat and Bob to take in. They become Babette's "pack," or family. Babette, it must be said, is an uncannily intelligent dog and her antics often lead to many fascinating turns in the narrative. What readers experience is rare fiction that realistically incorporates a pet, this Shih Tzu in particular, into a compelling novel-what Walter achieves in Babette's Pack can make anyone's reading time worthwhile.
