New Children's Book by Alma Haygood is Released

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -

Freckle-faced Elgin Thor Davis is not impressed with his first day in his first-grade class even though he's been looking forward to it for months, especially when Miss Rumbley begins talking about classroom rules. As the story in this new children's book reveals later on, however, knowing the rules is important. Elgin would rather play outside or daydream than talk about rules, and his lack of attention creates an unfortunate situation that could have been even worse.

The students discuss three rules for their classroom: keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself; listen to and follow the directions of all your teachers; and treat your classmates and others with respect. As they move on to hallway rules, Elgin begins daydreaming once again because he's bored, and his friends try to tell him he needs to listen. That attitude gets him into trouble on the playground. When the class begins to talk about fire drill procedures, Elgin daydreams about being president instead of listening. Will he know what to do or will the fire drill take him by surprise?

"Too Many Rules" gives children a gentle lesson in why they should pay attention to rules. The book also provides a general guide for what needs to happen during a fire drill. Featuring easy-to-read words and cartoon-like illustrations by Al Margolis, the book works equally well as a story for children to read silently or for teachers or parents to read aloud.

Author Alma Haygood retired from Fairfax County Public Schools after more than 35 years as an early childhood educator. She also worked as a day-care center director and taught preschool through third grades. Haygood, who is trained in reading recovery, leveled literacy intervention and teaching literacy in primary classrooms, earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Alabama A&M University and a master's degree in new professional studies: teaching from George Mason University. She lives in the Washington, D.C., area and likes to play the bass clarinet in the orchestra and sing.
