STANHOPE, N.J.

The Great War, the first global conflict in history, thrust the world in unprecedented chaos and destruction. In the recently released book titled "Liebe Kück!: A German Soldier's Story from the Great War" (published by Xlibris), Peter Lubrecht Sr. sheds new light on this grim episode through the experiences of Sgt. Alwin Ficke, his grandfather who served in the German Imperial Army.

"Liebe Kück!: A German Soldier's Story from the Great War" is based on the letters that Sgt. Ficke wrote home to his wife and family from August 1914 until his death in France in February 1915. The sergeant's viewpoint paints a different, not usually seen picture of German military actions in Belgium and the Champagne Valley. His story of life on the battlefields also gives voice to the hope and fear that millions of people, regardless of political convictions and allegiances, felt in the midst of the violence and trauma of the First World War.

"These are the words of a caring family man who was thrust into a situation where survival was improbable," Lubrecht says, "One hundred years later, they provide a picture of a nightmare endured by many and survived by few, which need to be set in a time and a place that shows prewar daily life followed by the upheaval and disasters of the war years."

By sharing this account, Lubrecht has painted a humanistic portrait of the Great War, correcting the common misconception of wars being black and white. "Liebe Kück!: A German Soldier's Story from the Great War" is a story of a life-changing journey from home to battle and a glimpse into the struggles of ordinary people caught up in extraordinary times.
