New Book Recounts Great War Through German Sergeant's Story

The Great War, the first global conflict in history, thrust the world in unprecedented chaos and destruction. Alwin Ficke, his grandfather who served in the German Imperial Army.

"Liebe Kück!: A German Soldier's Story from the Great War" is based on the letters that Sgt. Ficke wrote home to his wife and family from August 1914 until his death in France in February 1915. The sergeant's viewpoint paints a different, not usually seen picture of German military actions in Belgium and the Champagne Valley. His story of life on the battlefields also gives voice to the hope and fear that millions of people, regardless of political convictions and allegiances, felt in the midst of the violence and trauma of the First World War.

Peter Lubrecht Sr. holds a PhD in educational theater from New York University and a master's degree in English and drama theory from NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Science. An avid researcher with an interest in historical theater, Lubrecht has been lecturing locally on the Civil War and 19th century American Theater.
