Somewhere between the skill of writing compelling prose and the craft of creating memorable song lyrics, poetry exists as a unique vehicle for expressing beauty, love, loss, faith, joy, pain and redemption. In her new book 'Nikao's Psalms,' author Nikao Faith shares her poetic perspective from the grim, dark corners of her own life. Each piece stops short of traditional confessional poetry, carefully withholding the details of her experiences without sacrificing the personal and powerful message of the fragility and strength of the human condition.

'Nikao's Psalms' is a collection of 40 poems-each one a sacred homage-that reveals the unbearable burden of heartache, tragedy, loss and the struggle to remain grounded in God's guidance. While it is not entirely clear (by design) what or how much Faith has lost or suffered, her contemplation of those difficult experiences is expressed with conviction and unwavering honesty. Her ability to communicate the intensity of her losses, fears and abject loneliness is masterful, as is her commitment to never give up or give in.

Faith carries some common themes throughout her collection, the most apparent of which is her belief in the promise of hope and the love of God. With that as the basis for her aptly named "psalms," Faith explores the inevitable darkness and suffering that come and go as life moves on and forward. She expresses gut-wrenching pain related to a separation from her children that is palpable, despite the unknown of why or for how long they were separated. It is, perhaps, the darkest of all her hardships-a pain so visceral she fears it might kill her.

Poetry has long been a cathartic release for writers and readers, and 'Nikao's Psalms' is no exception. It is, in fact, a perfect example of how the pairing of words and the expression of the innermost workings of the heart and mind can come together to create an unlikely piece of art that exposes the vulnerability of humanity and serves as a therapeutic process for the author herself. "The ability to articulate on paper what largely could not be shared with another human being is therapeutic," says Faith. "It created hope, put things into perspective and even helped to prophesy things which were to come to pass in my life. Writing short pieces is more than just a form of expression, it has been part of my sheer survival."
