Princess Diana's family will allow public visitors to spend the weekend with them at the Althorp estate where she grew up and stay in THE ROOM where she slept, THE FAMILY exclusively told NBC News's Cynthia McFadden for a story airing during ON ASSIGNMENT Sunday night at 7 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. CT. The Spencer family is opening the doors to the 500 year-old mansion that features a history of noble guests and a world-class art collection among 100,000 square feet in order to raise funds for Whole Child, the charity started by Countess Karen Spencer, American wife of Diana's brother, Earl Charles Spencer. "I've always thought of this house as contributing," Earl Charles Spencer told McFadden. "It's not just a little bastion or fortress of privilege."

McFadden will take viewers on a rare and intimate tour of Althorp with Earl Charles Spencer and Karen Spencer during Sunday night's story, including a first look at a never-before-seen area of the mansion. A preview of the story airs Friday morning on NBC News's "TODAY" and the full story premieres Sunday night during "On Assignment," a new limited series from "Dateline NBC."

Whole Child is a charity that works to improve conditions for children living in orphanages around the world. McFadden travels with Karen Spencer to Nicaragua, where independent researchers found her efforts have resulted in substantial improvements. But Spencer faces criticism for her work, since many international aid organizations would rather see orphanages closed.

Also on Sunday's "On Assignment," Richard Engel gets rare access to Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, the heart of secretive U.S. drone warfare operations overseas, and interviews CIA Director John Brennan about the country's drone warfare strategy. And Josh Mankiewicz investigates THE STORY BEHIND the brand-new Bay Bridge, an architectural marvel that finished BILLIONS of dollars over budget.

"On Assignment" is produced by the "Dateline NBC" team, with Senior Executive Producer David Corvo and Executive Producer Liz Cole.
