How does alcoholism shape the story of a family? Readers follow the story of Judith and Annabel, two people whose fates are bound to entwine in a roller coaster of uncommon circumstances. Judith is a young artist who meets and falls in love with Claude, a fixated doctorate student probing Vincent van Gogh's mental incongruence which is believed to have led to his suicide. Judith's mother is an alcoholic. Annabel, on the other hand, is a financial advisor to the NHS. Her job is deficit reduction within the hospital trusts. These two diverse characters are drawn into a complex relationship, which is not of their making, and for much of the story, both are unaware of the threads that bind them. These threads slowly tighten and strengthen until they are inexorably bound together.

Dark, sensuous, original, "Paradise Lost" is not only an unflinching exploration of the devastating effects of neglect and addiction, but also of the extreme pleasures of art. The author writes with the authenticity of experience, having been a victim of alcoholism and a difficult childhood herself. The resulting concoction is a raw depiction of the inner battle fought by many that echoes their fear, pain and overwhelming self-conflict.

About the Author
Author Mollie Bach worked as a nurse and as a psychiatric nurse therapist. She trained at the Maudsley Hospital in London. She wanted to help children of alcoholics and those who are damaged by them. Bach did her research project on motivation in substance abuse. She was ill when she was young and had nervous breakdown at 22. She considered herself lucky and had Jungian analysis which saved her from herself and changed her life. She wrote a book 20 years ago but did not have the chance to get it published. The author is widowed with three children.
