WEST ORANGE, N.J., May. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire-iReach/ Starlit Carrara, aged ten, is in search of seven Tools of Power. To recover them, she must travel through space and time and must even pass into the hollow earth Agartha, where the Queen of Piora rules. Starlit learns from the Queen that rebels have wrongfully stolen the items and escaped with them to Earth. Yet through her personal experience, Starlit discovers that the thieves, in contrast to the Queen's testimony, have noble characters and good reasons for their so-called crime. On her journeys to Australia, Italy, India, Poland, Mount Purgatory, future New York, ancient Pangea and present Piora she learns a great deal about power, deception, and moral ambiguity. Her view of the world and her relationships with others grow increasingly complex.

At 45.000 words, The Passage to Piora is a modern fantasy novel with elements of soft science-fiction and time travel. It deals with the vicissitudes of power and its corrupting influence on human relationships. What makes the book special is that it covers a broad target audience, from young adults (10+) to mature adults. Readers at the lower end of the target spectrum will follow the narrative on a more literal level, whereas adults may understand the story on an allegorical level. The heroine learns that the tools she seeks bestow their wearers with special powers, which can be used to create shared, interpersonal bonds or else to disconnect one individual from another, depending on his or her moral character. Starlit realizes that many uses of powerwhether in the service of religious, political or psychological endsare characterized by moral ambiguity and that good and evil are no concepts to be easily grasped. The book strives to bring real-world questions to the attention of young readers while simultaneously entertaining them.

The author, Annett Heibel, was born in East-Berlin, East-Germany in 1974 and grew up behind the Iron Curtain.
