SIMPSONVILLE, S.C., April 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ Author Michelle Martin Dobbins is bringing her considerable talents to the world of picture books with "My Heart is in Afghanistan." Written for children who have a military parent deployed abroad, the book features illustrations by artist Daniela Frongia and an emotional, compelling story to which many young readers will relate. Dobbins and her team have launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring "My Heart is in Afghanistan" to life.

Lizzie, the main character in "My Heart is in Afghanistan," deals with feelings of loneliness and loss while her father serves far away in Afghanistan. Before he deployed, she made him a paper heart for Valentine's Day, which inspires the book's title. For the 12 months he's away, Lizzie must find the courage to go to school, celebrate holidays and family events, and otherwise live a normal life. Yet, she always remembers that her "heart" is in Afghanistan.

"Lizzie's experience in 'My Heart is in Afghanistan' is an important story for me to share," says Dobbins, "a story that I believe can help so many children cope with the separation they face when their parents are deployed for service. I want this book to serve these brave children, just as their parents serve us so bravely."

Dobbins working together with Demi Stevens of Year of the Book Press to ensure the success of her newest book. Stevens and her company specialize in children's books. "My Heart is in Afghanistan" has already earned accolades the manuscript won 3rd place in the 2014 Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators of the Carolinas.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of "My Heart is in Afghanistan" will go to benefit charities like Folds of Honor, which provides scholarship funds for children of fallen and disabled soldiers.

Dobbins invites parents to like the Facebook page for "My Heart is in Afghanistan," and to follow her on Instagram, Pinterest and Google+.
