The publication of the book by Michael Craig "Encounters with the Russian Avant-garde" marks a milestone in the available material on this subject. It is a companion to the six part Arts Documentary Series: The Russian Avant-Garde "Revolution or Renaissance" - Copernicus Films

The book is not only an account or explanation of this phenomenon but to be more specific an "encounter." The title reflects an active relationship: firstly through the experience of living in Moscow for many years plus a direct encounter with the buildings, architecture and the very territory in which the Russian Avant-garde arose and still exists today. The full colour plates and diagrams enhance the text creating a rich and detailed introduction to The Russian avant-garde of the 1920's and 1930s, featuring figures such as: Mayakovsky, Kandinsky, Malevich, Alexander Rodchenko, Meyerhold and many others.

After a decade working in the film and television industry in the UK, Michael Craig traveled to Moscow in 1995 to make films and write where he has lived and worked ever since. He made the first documentary film in the series "Alexander Rodchenko and the Russian Avant-garde" in 1999 which premiered at the Milan International Film Festival (MIFF) and was shown on British Television. From here he embarked on a series of films about the Russian Avant-garde of the 1920s and 30s:
