Life doesn't end after traumatic brain injury. Andrew Penman tells his unique story of recovery in his new book, "Andrew Penman's Long Unwinding Road: An Inspiring Story of Natural Self-Healing."

The book follows Penman after a March 1989 car accident left him in a coma. Upon awakening, Andrew and his loved ones realized the hard work was just beginning.

"Movies led me to believe that coming out of a coma would be simple and once I was awake I'd be running around the next day," Penman says. "That was definitely not the case, as my recovery continues today."

Fighting permanent brain damage, Andrew learned to walk, talk and drive on his own. He even began Aikido training despite warnings from his doctors to avoid strenuous activity. Penman supplements his story with his mother's diaries from after the accident and coma.

The end goal, he says, is to help others struggling with the effects of traumatic accidents.

"When I had the accident, I had no one to guide me because surviving a traumatic brain injury was virtually unheard of," Penman says. "I had to learn by my mistakes and it's been slow progress. I hope this book can give able injured and disabled people the hope they need."
