When Melissa A. Jones and her family found an injured blue jay and brought it home to nurse it back to health, the bird returned to them year after year following its release back into the wild.

Inspired by this unique, heartwarming experience, Jones thought it would make a nice children's story. In her new book, "Squawky: The Little Blue Jay" (published by Trafford Publishing), Jones tells the true-life story of Squawky the blue jay.

Sally is a young girl who lives with her father. She is happy a blue jay family has built a nest in her backyard. When one of the baby birds gets stuck on a thorn in a tree, Sally and her father rescue him and name him Squawky.

Together, Sally and her father work to give Squawky the loving care he needs to get back into the wild, and the baby blue jay is returned to his nest a few days later. The experience forms a bond between the humans and their new backyard bird family.

"Squawky" is a colorfully illustrated, uplifting story about the love between a girl and her father, compassion for wildlife and the growing bond between humans and birds who need their help.
