In "A Rose Without a Thorn" (published by AuthorHouse), author Marilyn Kohinke Washburn's intriguing, suspenseful historical novel, readers find themselves in 16th century Tudor England during King Henry VIII's reign as he seeks his fourth wife.

The Catholic and Protestant factions are in a perilous race against time to sway the king to their side. Whichever religious faction can get him to wed a woman from their religion and bear a son will have complete control over his kingdom. But with many of the women of his court praying he does not choose them - due to the fact that Henry VIII's has already divorced one wife and beheaded another - the factions find that they must force someone of their choosing upon him. "In a time when religious freedom was nonexistent and when women were still considered their husband's property, timeless motivators such as love, hate, greed, jealousy, betrayal and hubris were very much in existence," explains Washburn. "The stage is thus set for the rise and fall of many powerful courtiers close to King Henry VIII's, including those he once passionately vowed his enduring love for."

An excerpt from "A Rose Without a Thorn":

"The King glanced about, blinking back tears. He gripped the arms of his throne then stood up slowly, glaring at his ministers. 'You,' his voice building into the painful roar of a wounded lion as he pointed at them, 'I blame all of you, my lords, for this last mischief! By God! A sword, a sword! Bring me a sword for I shall slay her that I loved! Oh wanton, wicked woman! A sword! Bring me a sword for she had not such delight in her incontinence as she shall have pain in her death!'"
