Kurdistan is a fragile dream, described by Al-Jazeera as "an ancient one that floats across cities and valleys, through crumbling souks and oil fields, stretched across four nations." From Saddam Hussein's campaign of ethnic cleansing to the depredations of the ISIS terror group, the Kurdish people have endured much over the years. Chiman Zebari remembers her own escape from Iraq, the sanctuary she found in the United States and the new life she made there, while keeping her heritage, including its unique and delicious Kurdish recipes. With her new book, she shares her account of "My Life, My Food, My Kurdistan" (published by Xlibris), taking readers back to that dream with all its vibrant sights, its delectable flavors and unforgettable experiences.

Zebari recounts a compelling story of a woman who immigrated to the United States after Saddam Hussein's tyranny and vicious purges in the 1970s. As a young girl, she was in an arranged marriage, yet ultimately she tells a story of personal strength, achievement and autonomy. She shows that even the most turbulent journeys are often simultaneously rewarding. Her narrative juxtaposes the anxieties resulting from leaving her homeland and adapting to her new home, strange land, while dealing with the stresses of marriage, life and motherhood. She conveys how these experiences cultivated within her an attitude of perseverance while she shares her recipes, describing how cooking became a special process, a way to entertain and treat family and friends, a channel for her inextinguishable passion for life - an inspiring and empowering message that she passes on to her audience.

"I wrote this book because I wanted to tell my story. I wanted to tell about my homeland, my struggle and my achievements. I wanted to leave something behind that can be useful." Zebari says. "I could have easily been destroyed if I had given up in life. However, I believe that hope and courage along with hard work will get you anywhere you desire."
