Akelian is a fantasy land inhabited by elves and filled with magic and beauty. This dream land is the creation of author MJ Foulks. Her new book, "Legends of Akelian: Tales from the Elvish Realms" (published by iUniverse), is the prologue of a planned six-book series.

Demetri and Darion are twins living in the magical world of Akelian. It is the summer of their 12th birthday, and their grandmother teaches them about the world through her "elvish" fairy tales. Along the way, the boys learn more about themselves and set out on the adventure of a lifetime.

"This book shows how much you can learn from fairy tales of another culture," Foulks says. "These elvish tales transcend the gaps of culture, and can teach important life lessons even to human children."

Foulks insists that her book is not simply a children's fantasy tale, but rather contains themes of war, bigotry and racism. She believes children need to understand darker aspects of the world around them in order to learn important life lessons.

"Legends of Akelian" stars two main characters learning the difficult truths of the world around them; in this way, young readers can grow and learn along with Demetri and Darion.
